6 x 6 , "Scooty and Storm", oil on panel
This is an oil study for the first in a series of paintings that focus on a more domestic theme than I have done in the past. While paintings of babies can be overtly saccharine there are many artists who have tackled this subject with some amazing results. Vuillard, Bonnard, Cassatt and Sorolla are just a few of the great painters who featured babies and domestic scenes in their paintings. I will spend some time in the next few posts exploring more artists both past and present who have tackled this subject matter. Keep in mind that these paintings are not meant to be portraits! In this preliminary study, I was focused on the overall design of the painting and the values of the large shapes. I can see that I have to refine a few areas in this study both in color and value. I'll probably try a pastel version of the same study to see if the same issues are still there before I go on to a bigger version.

Great idea for a series, Eden. I'm looking forward to it! Babies fit so compactly into a square format and that should help with the composition possibilities (plus they are irresistable.)
